What Happens When Nations Don't Counter Terrorism

Terrorism is an act of intimidation through unlawful means to make the government and citizens of a nation succumb to their demands which could be political, ideological or religious. People who perpetrate terrorism are known as terrorists. They are usually in the hiding, especially after committing a criminal act, thereby making it difficult for the government to unleash its military forces on them.

Fighting this ugly incident is hard especially in less developed countries where the use of advanced technology such as forensics is not full blown. As a result, the inhabitants and the country as a whole experience bad times. Some of the things that happen in a place where it is difficult to counter terrorism have been highlighted here.

When a terrorist wants to strike, his primary aim is to kill. He believes that when he does this, more attention is gotten and civilians become more afraid. A typical example of terrorists trying to claim lives can be linked to what happened at the World Trade Center in September 2001. Despite the capture of the ringleader in that act, terrorists' activities have still continued to spread to different parts of the world.

Properties are also lost in the process. In their bid to claim more lives, the terrorists often target public places where people are confined. For example, they could target shopping malls, the markets, and churches. Residential buildings are also targeted in most cases.

The loss of lives and properties makes poverty pronounced. The terrorists are mindful of doing this so that the people will be more handicapped to fight back. The investments people made in houses and industries are suddenly gone leaving them with no plan for survival. Hunger then sets in leading to more loss of lives.

The immediate need of the government after a terrorist attack is to make the citizens feel some peace and hope. This is done by replacing lost infrastructure that makes life comfortable. Among them include damaged roads, destroyed markets and provision of water for the masses assuming some pipes were also destroyed. In addition, the urgent need to improve on security makes the government recruit more into the police and military forces. They also have to condole with the families that lost a lot in the incident.

The government also loses money when foreign investors run away from doing business because of the unsafe environment. Foreign investments are a major source of government revenue in many developing countries so when terrorist attacks are prevalent, they lose a lot. Even developed countries that partner with some world powers may lose the close relationship that exists among them because of the fear of losing their lives and investments in the affected country.

When the people are no longer sure of who is going to die next, everyone is on the run. Tourists think of such place as the last to visit even if they could hardly spend a vacation outside the area in the past. Until the terrorists that wreak havoc in the area are conquered, the country affected will continue to lose money from tourism. In fact, they have additional work of rehabilitating damaged tourist attractions and this is more wastage of money.
